Project Overview

This was a new ground-up build of a Circle K convenience store and fuel station in Port Richey, Florida, covering roughly 5,300 square feet. The site included seven regular fuel dispensers (14 pumps) and two high-speed diesel dispensers (4 pumps), along with a fire sprinkler system added to make up for low water flow at the nearby fire hydrant.

Project Highlights

What made this project unique:

  • Several soil types across the site called for numerous Proctor tests, which measure how well soil compacts, making compaction testing more involved than on a typical job.
  • Work started before the fire permit was issued, which delayed excavation and site electrical activity.
  • A high water table (groundwater sitting close to the surface) required dewatering, or pumping water out, before the underground fuel tanks and canopy foundations could be set.
  • Dave Murray stepped in as Superintendent after another Superintendent had already started the job, getting up to speed quickly to keep momentum going.
  • A fuel spill during tank filling was caught before turnover. Crews removed and replaced the contaminated material before closeout, which prevented long-term pavement problems.
