Molly’s Journey Into Building at Stansell Construction

white blueprint

Breaking into the construction industry can be challenging, especially for women in a traditionally male-dominated field. But for Project Manager, Molly Snowdon, taking the leap into construction wasn’t just a career move—it was a passion-driven decision that completely transformed her professional path. In this interview, she shares how she transitioned from property management to project management, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and her advice for women looking to break into the industry.

Q: Can you share a little about your background and what led you to construction?

Molly: “Before joining the construction industry, I worked as a Property Manager for a commercial real estate owner in California. My job involved managing shopping centers, overseeing tenant buildouts, and handling property maintenance. Over time, I realized that the part of my job I loved the most was working on construction projects.”

“I had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of buildouts—everything from small, family-owned businesses to major brands like Chick-fil-A, CVS, and Target. I even worked on saunas, restaurants, and urgent care centers. But construction was just a small part of my role, and I wanted it to be my full focus. I also knew I wanted to work with multiple clients rather than just one landlord.”

“That’s when I decided to make the leap. I started searching for general contracting companies in California, Colorado, and Florida. When I came across Stansell Construction, I had my first interview with Niel—and the rest is history. It was a big risk to change career paths, but I knew it was the right move. Now, I can confidently say I’m much happier pursuing the work I love.”

Q: What was the learning curve like when transitioning into construction full-time?

Molly: “Construction is a fast-paced industry, and the best way to learn is by jumping right in. I realized early on that I couldn’t wait for learning opportunities to come to me—I had to seek them out myself.”

“I started as an Assistant Project Manager (APM) and Coordinator, which helped me understand the administrative side of the business. I focused on learning ProCore, navigating the permitting process, and handling subcontracts and insurance. You can’t build anything if you don’t have the proper approvals and paperwork, so that was a crucial foundation.”

“From there, I started stepping into the role of a Project Manager (PM). Stansell gave me two experienced PMs who supported my goals and made sure I was involved in every phone call, email, and site visit. They took the time to explain construction concepts, go over drawings in detail, and walk me through industry best practices.”

“Of course, at some point, you have to take the plunge. The only way to truly grow in this industry is to throw yourself into it. There were moments when I felt hesitant or in over my head, but Stansell has built a culture of support. I work with people who genuinely want to see me succeed, and that makes all the difference.”

Q: What’s your favorite part about being a woman in construction?

Molly: “I love bringing a fresh perspective to the table. Men and women often approach problem-solving in different ways, and I think that’s a huge strength. As a female Project Manager, I can bring insights and ideas that might not have been considered before.”

“I also enjoy the reactions I get when I tell people I work in construction—it always surprises them! There’s still a misconception that construction is too tough for women, but that idea is becoming more outdated every day. More women are entering the industry, and I love being part of that shift.”

Q: What advice would you give to women looking to enter the construction industry?

Molly: “Be your own advocate. Speak up for what you want, vocalize your goals, and don’t be afraid to pursue a path that might be outside the norm.”

“I’d also say—get out of your own head. Don’t overthink every little challenge or mistake. The only way to truly learn is to experience, adapt, and grow from each situation. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you, but also recognize that even those who doubt you can teach valuable lessons.”

“At the end of the day, construction is an industry where resilience and determination matter more than anything else. If you’re willing to put in the work, seek out opportunities, and embrace the learning process, you’ll find that this industry has a place for you.”
